MCC Celebrates Black Maternal Health Week 2025

MCC Staff gathered at Philadelphia City Hall for BMHW Advocacy Day!
Black Maternal Health Week (#BMHW25):

“Healing Legacies: Strengthening Black Maternal Health Through Collective Action and Advocacy!”

Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) is a week to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black mothers and birthing people. During this week we take this time to uplift and celebrate Black mothers, and birthing people while continuing to promote Black maternal health, advocate for policy changes, and dismantle the racial inequities in healthcare that cause infant and maternal mortality.

This BMHW, MCC staff, alongside our partners and community members hosted, attended, and supported a series of events to celebrate, learn, raise awareness, and to continue to fight for a future of health equity.

Here's what happened:

  • 4/10: Black Maternal Health Week Breakfast and Resolution Introduction Meeting

  • MCC’s CEO, Marianne A. Fray spoke at Councilmember Katherine Gilmore-Richardson's Black Maternal Health Week Breakfast and Resolution Introduction Meeting.

  • 4/14: Delaware Healthy Mother & Infant Consortium Summit & DE Thrives

  • MCC’s Vice President of Programs, Samia Bristow, alongside Delaware staff attended the DHMIC & Delaware Thrives Mother & Infant Consortium Summit.

  • 4/15: Rooted in Care: 2025 BMHW Advocacy Day

  • MCC partnered with OSHUN to hold an Advocacy Day at Philadelphia City Hall. MCC staff joined policymakers, healthcare professionals, community members, and advocates for a lunch and learn that highlighted the challenges and solutions to ensuring safer births and brighter futures for Black mothers and birthing people in Philadelphia, and visits with legislators to talk about Black Maternal Health Week.

  • 4/15: Montco Mamas Community Baby Shower

  • Alongside our partners at ACLAMO and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services and commissioner Jamila Winder, MCC hosted our annual community baby shower—a fun-filled day that featured games, food and giving away free baby care items to new and expectant mothers.

  • The baby shower is used to congratulate and support new and expectant mothers, parenting families and pregnant people of Montgomery County, on their bundle of joy!

  •

While we are grateful for this time to raise critical awareness on the maternal health crisis and its effect on Black mothers and birthing people, let’s not forget to celebrate and continue to stay united in fighting for a future of health equity for all!
