MCC’s Position and Stance on the Overturn of Roe v. Wade

Today, the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion, reversing Roe v. Wade and ending five decades worth of reproductive health protections.
Since 1980, Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) has been an advocate for the wellbeing of some of the most vulnerable members of our community – pregnant people and small children. In these last forty years, policies and practices that impact maternal-child health have threatened the safety of our families like never before.

As an organization MCC views abortion in the context of public health, and more specifically maternal and child health. It is one of many reproductive health services that should be safe and accessible to all pregnant and parenting families regardless of their ability to pay. Any infringement of access to healthcare for women, birthing people, and families is a threat to the overall health of our nation. No one should have to experience violence when seeking healthcare.

MCC believes in an equitable and just future for all families and is committed to challenging the structures that create barriers to equity and autonomy. Parenting with autonomy honors the expertise that every parent has in their own experience, and their right to set goals for themselves and their families and seek success through their own definitions and methods, free from value judgements and expectations established in systemically inequitable institutions. This includes family planning and abortion access, but also supports that help us before, during, and after pregnancy like doula reimbursement, affordable childcare, and paid parental leave.

MCC is committed to working with our partners to ensure equitable maternal health outcomes and deepening access to care. The presence of legal abortion and comprehensive reproductive healthcare means that birthing people have the power to create the families they desire. That is what equity and autonomy looks like. That is what we stand for.
