Commissioner Valerie Arkoosh Visits MCC

The key (to tackling the issues around motherhood and Black maternal mortality) is valuing birthing people and children and making them feel safe ...

Recently, MCC had the pleasure of educating Commissioner Valerie Arkoosh about the work that our Programs staff does on a daily basis. Our conversation was hosted by Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) Chief Executive Officer Marianne Fray and included representatives from various MCC programs sharing their knowledge about Black maternal mortality.

The conversation revolved around the experiences and obstacles that our clients have while navigating the healthcare system. Our advocates play an integral role in ensuring that parents’ concerns and overall comfort level is always maintained. They are able to act as a liaison for birthing people and ensure that their voice is always heard while they are receiving healthcare for both themselves and their baby.

Having our staff present and making sure that their needs are met allows parents to focus on the thing that matters most, their new family. Marianne Fray noted “The key (to tackling the issues around motherhood and Black maternal mortality) is valuing birthing people and children and making them feel safe and secure as we move forward  and provide care".
