We at Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) cannot fathom that it has been a year since the 2020 Celebrating Mothers Brunch. We gathered then on February 29, 2020, entirely unaware of what was to come. For many of you and many of us, that was the largest and latest event we enjoyed together.
The Celebrating Mothers Campaign is a tradition over 20 years in the making. We need it now more than ever.
This year’s Celebrating Mothers, albeit virtual, is an opportunity to gather and listen to the stories of families’ resiliency this year, and perhaps be so moved to share our own. The February 25, 2021 event will launch a springtime campaign where our goal is to truly, deeply, and authentically celebrate mothers.
And mothers deserve a ton of celebration. As is abundantly clear to those in the field and increasingly more apparent to the general public, maternal health and well-being is formative for child, family, and community health and well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic has further underscored the link among health, social, and economic needs and the vast divisions in the United States along racial fault lines. What’s more is that the gains mothers were making in the workforce are quickly slipping away as more of us must tend to our families during this stay-at-home and virtual era.
So this celebration will allow us to pause, to reflect on the year we’ve each had, and to prepare for what’s to come, all while raising awareness, advocacy, and funds to allow MCC to continue to do what we do best: strengthen families and inspire change.
This year, 6abc’s Tamala Edwards will be joining us as our host for the fifth year and we will be presenting Representative Morgan Cephas with the heartfelt Strengthening Families Award!
