Breastfeeding improves the health of mothers and babies, but breastfeeding benefits the whole family as well as society.

Breastfeeding is a healthy, low-cost, and sustainable choice, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of your baby’s life.

Good for Babies

  • Makes babies stronger: Easy to digest and the most complete form of nutrition
  • Makes babies happier: Strengthens the mother-baby bond
  • Makes babies healthier: Reducing acute and chronic childhood diseases such as diarrhea, ear infections, pneumonia, meningitis, asthma, diabetes, celiac disease and even some types of childhood cancers
  • Reduces Suddent Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
  • Improves responses to immunizations
  • May enhance cognitive development

Good for Moms and Dads

  • Saves time: No preparation of formula and bottles
  • Saves money: Breastmilk is free. Families save $3000-$4000 a year over formula
  • Reduces healthcare costs and sick days: Breastfed babies are healthier
  • Feels good: Breastfeeding reduces anxiety and creates a family bond
  • Burns calories: Mom returns to pre-pregnancy weight faster
  • Protects mom against cancer and diabetes

Breastfeeding mothers need support from their families, their health care providers and their employers.
